24 Months Since the Start of the “Russian Invasion of Ukraine”

Date: February 24, 2024

Details of Conversation: Today marks 2 years since Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine, intended to take control of the nation’s government through an attack capital of Kyiv, through these calls, we have learned this is really a continuation of the war with Russo-Ukrainian that began in February 2014. For the benefit of those who may be new to our monthly calls and to refresh memories for others, can you somewhat briefly (I know that will be hard) provide an overview of the two year/ten year history?

Navalny: Given the recent death in prison of Russian opposition figure and outspoken Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, can you speak to the potential impact of Navalny’s followers and the possibility of his wife leading meaningful dissent that might impact the Ukraine invasion in some way?

US Funding: As Americans, I likely speak for most on the call in voicing our frustration with the U.S government’s inability to get a funding package approved to provide further support for Ukraine’s efforts to fight Putin. As discouraging as it is for us in hearing about battlefield setbacks and possible future conscription expansion, we can’t help but wonder how the people of Ukraine can remain hopeful. (I acknowledge you have expressed in the past that you have no choice.)

Timothy Snyder: During Yale Professor Timothy Snyder’s recent interview with The Telegraph, he shares many positives about Ukraine’s efforts to date despite the current non-stalemate. As a Ukrainian citizens in the midst of the war, are you able to take a step back from the impact on your day-to-day life (i.e. loss of colleagues/family, threat of conscription, constant fear of attack, power outages, as just a few example) to see the value of any of Professor Snyder’s observations?

He shared his insights into the prevalent disappointments, highlighting three major misjudgments: the assumptions about Putin’s strategy with Putin’s hope of a Trump presidential victory in the USA, the underestimated capabilities of Russia’s military, and the unexpected extent to which the government was prepared to sacrifice a vast number of soldiers in direct combat. Ivan also shed light on President Zelensky’s current political stance, the realities of developing software amidst ongoing bombings, and the situation of Ukrainian citizens as they brace themselves for the third year of enduring attacks and invasions by the Russian military.
